It appears to be some form of Hinoki cypress, Chamaecyparis obtusa. Browning of the interior foliage is very common with these and a natural occurrence. If that is all that is worrying you, I think your tree is fine.

(I grow a pretty good sized collection of Hinokis and other dwarf conifers in containers on a permanent basis - I see interior browning on all of them from time to time. It is usually a seasonal thing).

Thank you very much for the feedback gardengal. I think it is some type of hinoki but lost the tag. The yellowing showed up about a week ago and seems to be accelerating quickly. I will hold off as I guess its bad time to repot conifers.

It's not too wet, is it? Hinokis like moist soil but good drainage. How often do you water?

Its cooled off here and Ive cut back accordingly but suspect too much water might be the problem. Iam not using FP or protekt anymore as we are almost into the dormancy period. I watered the heck out of it the other day to ensure it was draining and its seems to have responded with faster yellowing. Was thinking that its almost impossible to overwater the gritty mix but maybe thats the problem.

With our weather in the 60s and 70s and the tree getting more shade Ive been giving it a quart or two every other day.
