Hey, I am new to this gardening thing I had success with my cucs and bell peppers this summer when looking for winter crops I found that I could grow garlic. I know I need to plant about 4 inches apart but that is all I know. if anyone has any insight as to watering frequency, if I need to insulate my containers during the winter or anything else that might help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Root space in a pot is all you got left to think about I never tried garlic inside but I do push a single tulip inside for X Mas flowering I use a 5 inch round terra cotta at 6 inches deep ( we even deco the pot in lights )
Just a concern on root area from from me for garlic They dont seem to take up much space outside, in a pot roots might not like being pot bond to me...I grow Elephant garlic outside they get some room to spread out if they need to
Maybe a rectangular shape pot will do you well. They wont mind wraping there roots around each other. Best soil would be the same soil as growing an onion. No clue on fert ideas I never thought to use specail ferts on my outdoor garlic. I stick em em the back side view of rose beds for pest control and they just grow in there, they always comes back up too (it helps keep ants, grubs, aphids and some other garden pest in check)I can only guess but it seems any good garden soil would do

You'll probably want to skip the 'good garden soil' option and opt for a soil that drains well in a container - something all bulbs appreciate, or nearly require.

Don't over-water and don't under-water. Soil needs to only be barely damp over winter. I would try to keep the soil from freezing solid (helps preserve fine roots), but beyond that it will need no protection.

As usual, what Al says is great advice. =) My Elephant Garlic (in a container) is getting huge & it's cold out! lol
