Pine and Fir (and possibly Spruce and Hemlock as well) have Suberin and Lignin content that makes them durable, slow to decompose, and resistant to collapse (structural integrity).

Pine and Fir bark also has a favorable pH and a good water retention curve.

Pine and Fir bark, when purchased in bulk, are also economical, as compared to the cost of filling containers with something like Ocean Forest potting mix.

Pine and Fir bark tend to produce a slightly lighter weight mix, which is handy in larger containers.

For all these reasons, bark makes an excellent filler (main component) of a container mix.
