Watering Boxwood, Winter & Year-Roung

Hello!

I just planted boxwood in a container outside (see attached pic) 15" high x 48" long.

The shrubs are each 16".

How much should I water each of them? I planted them a week ago. I've been watering them 1 gallon per week. Initial watering was a complete soak.

It's still above freezing here.

Any suggestions on how much to water, this winter and year-round would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!
Jeff

No one can give specific watering instructions that are meaningful, but water when the plant needs it is probably the safest advice. Unless you're using a soil that holds little or no perched water, any other advice could quickly get you into trouble. Watering is an art that is VERY under-appreciated by a high % of hobby growers.

Test the soil deep in the pot with a wood dowel or skewer & only water when it feels almost but not completely dry deep in the pot. That advice needs to be tempered by common sense, however - if the roots of a recent transplant/repot are in the top 1/3 of the pot, it's bad form to let the pot dry nearly to the bottom.
