I think 1-4 is suffice,at bottom of container. My first year (2009) I was thinking more is better , (I put 10-20 smaller ones in )yeah better at drying out faster. Better to have less holes and bigger ones if needed . I think I am going to block some of the extras off next year . Just some thing I learned from my first year ever at any garden .

You really only need one at the lowest point in the container assuming it doesn't get clogged up. No real harm in having more than one, but not required for water to drain properly. I guess what I am saying is I agree with you ;)

What I am doing is to glue screen over the existing holes and putting a piece of rope as a wick through one of the holes. This year I used styrofoam peanuts (bad idea) to block the drain holes so that the potting mix wouldn't drain out. When I dumped the soil at the end of the season, in addition to a number of slugs, worms and insects, there was a good sized shrew in the pot. Both of us were surprised. Larry

No need to glue the screen in, the potting mix will hold it in place. do you put the wick in because your soil drains poorly?

I put the wicks in because these will set on soil and Al suggested using wicks. Some of my containers have holes that are in the bottom and up the side, so glue seems to work. Larry |

Lately, I've been using that rubbery product made to line cabinets and drawers. It comes in a roll, it's easy to snip, it's flexible, and it has the right size holes. Josh

I used a handful of fallen leaves from the back yard to cover the bottom if I think there are too many holes.

Unless the holes are so big the soil is not contained, I don't worry about the water running freely. After it has passed through the soil I do not want to keep it in the container. Al
