It doesn't sound ridiculous, and many have asked that question. However, it does cause me a twinge of worry that folks are making 5-1-1 and using it for their plants without knowing when to water. Just seems that in the research to make the mix, one should also have read about watering techniques.

But all that aside, the easiest method is to push a wooden kabob skewer all the way into the mix and then use that skewer to tell when the mix is drying down sufficiently.

Be aware, of course, that the *root zones* of newer plantings should be kept adequately moist while the roots colonize the container.

As Josh explained. There are also moisture probes that you can buy.
In general a bark based soil needs watering more often than say MG Moisture Control, which is peat moss based.

How often to water would depend on several factors :
-- soil porosity/texture/ retention.
-- Pot (and plant) size
-- Ambient temperatures and humidity, amount of direct sun shining on the pot/plant.

After a few times of checking you'll get a hang of it. I water mine about once every 5 days. Some places need to water daily.

What about checking the nylon wick. Is that a good way to measure? Should the wick be bone dry before watering?

I just lift the pot & if it feels heavy, I leave it for a few more days.
If the pot feels light, I water.

I've got a few dozen pots or so and it varies from plant to plant.
