| Hello all!
I recently relocated my garden to an area that was once covered by an old apple sorting shed. It had been many years(20) since it was actively being used, so I assumed the ground would be suitable. I started plowing and uncovered an old partial bag of agri-strep. I mean, as I was plowing I actually noticed maybe a 1/2 cup of powder, and panicked. I had no idea what it was. I started digging around it to see if I could find any portion of the bag. Most had rotted away over the years of course, but I did find a small portion that said "agri-str..." with the last part missing. Since agri-strep was used on apples, I assumed that's what it was. The description matched too. It was a white powdery substance. My question... If I go thru and remove as much of the contaminated soil as possible, is it still ok to plant my vegetable garden over it? From what I've read it doesn't seem to be an extremely toxic pesticide... and some mentionings said something about soaking roots in a mixture of it before planting. Thanks! |

| Dustyz, From what the USDA and Cornell University in NY say about Agri-strep, it is streptomyacin, and practically non-toxic. It was used as a fungicide, and transplants were treated before placing out. Have you checked with your local agricultural agent, or the nearest state university? Usually they are very helpful. If you remove any white powder and till your new garden well, I see no reason to remove soil unless the above authorities recommend it. If you can wait a year, could you plant a "test garden" there now and see how the plants do, then if satisfactory, go ahead and plant the entire garden there next year. Hoping that your new garden spot works out well for you. |
