How do I make a perfect rectangle?

I am ready to start my backyard garden but how do I lay out a rectangle on the ground? my garden size will be 20' X 40'. Can anyone help me?

It'll never be prefect, it really doesn't have to be. I have one plot that's 25'x40' and even though it's a rough measurement (off by 6" on each side no doubt) it still looks like a goodly squared rectangle from all sides. The bigger it is the less noticable are the defects. vgkg

It'll be a perfect rectangle if the diagonals are both exactly the same length. (But I don't know how to do that except by trial and error.)

It doesn't have to be perfect by any means, but as I use the square foot method, I also try to draw the squares to make for accurate planting. I stand stakes at the corners and then measure with a tape measure or my trowel which is a foot long. Take a stake and push it in at a corner. Then go down 40 feet using another stake, (four or five feet long, whichever.) Push another one in at the bottom corner. Just do the same across and up the other side. You can use long rulers to measure and any type of stake to mark your corners.
