First garden pull

Just pulled my first vegetables from my garden this season. I have yellow bottleneck zucchini, and the green squash is fast to follow. I have a question though, my squash still has that hair on it, and I waited for it to come off to pull them, but it never did, and my squash got bigger than any I ever bought in the store so I just went ahead and pulled it. Also I have all kinds of insects in my garden, and am treating it with dish soap and neem oil only. So far I only have a little damage due to leaf miners, which I'm combating by tearing off the infected leaves. Has anyone had any luck with just using dish soap and neem oil as an insecticide?
