Hello, I am a rookie, this is my first attempt at raising a backyard garden and starting seeds indoors. I started some seeds indoors about a week ago using the toilet paper roll method. I noticed this morning a couple of them have roots coming out of the space in the folds on the bottom. Also there looks to be some fuzzy stuff on the exposed root. Is that a fungus? You can see in the image. Should I be concerned about this? What's an easy fix if this is a problem? Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thank you

The fuzzy stuff on the root are the feeder roots, its what actually absorbs nutrients from the soil. Your container is too small for the plant already, you need to up-pot it immediately to something at least 3 times that size if putting it outside in the ground right now is not an option.

Thank you both for the quick responses and help.

What is it? Looks like corn...
|
I agree with everything above except the urgency to transplant. I think you have a little time for that. Maybe until a leaf or two have developed. Plenty of light is essential, as much as you can give it. Jim

Edymnion I was thinking the same thing.

If it is corn, you may be in for some trouble. It doesn't really like being transplanted. If you start it in a nice big pot where you can take the dirt out in one lump and stick it in the ground you're usually fine, but corn gets really unhappy if you start messing with it's roots.

I disagree.....I've been transplanting corn for many years.I start 72 cells in six pack trays and transplant when they are about 1 month old. They almost all transplant with no problem. You can also start them in small jiffy pots with almost no transplant shock.
