A friend of mine has had an asparagus plant in a container for serveral years, and is planning to junk it this year. Doesn't work.

hi vanisle, my best suggestion would be to try Van Noort bulb co. they have an outlet in Langley, they carry several asparagus, not positive about the jersey knight,(they are whole sale so you could get a local garden store order them in... growing aspargee in a container....hmmm well it is just wrong,,,,I am guessing the soil temp and moisture level would fluctuate too much, for them to be happy.

I think most asparagus is sold male only. It's not but weeding out the females is a simple task.
This brings to mind a question about buying across borders. These companies can't always ship outside their country but can I ship asparagus to Canada?

In order to identify the female plants I think you'd have to grow them to seed bearing age (3 years?) - and you might want to make sure they don't get a chance to drop potentially-female seed before weeding them out. Some writers suggest you don't want any seed to drop anyway, to avoid overcrowding the bed with new volunteer plants.

As for shipping across borders, many US companies do ship seed to Canada but I haven''t found any willing to ship asparagus root. Whether that's because they're prohibited, and whether it also applies to other plants, I don't know.
