I just checked the 8-10 carrots I overwintered. Some how, something tore about 4 out of the ground and ate them! They were deep holes, maybe about 1 foot deep, because they were about a foot long due to growing a long time. I don't think Hare's are running around right now, so let's play the what animal this could be game. There are dogs running around sometimes, but would they be attracted to Carrots enough to pull them out and eat them?

I personally know 4 dogs who LOVE carrots. Did it look like dogs had dug them up? Dogs are messy diggers.

No, they were cleanly picked from the ground. The hole the carrots created is perfectly there. I know a human couldn't have done it, because the Carrots are too big for a human to eat without chopping it up a bit.

I just caught my neighbours Pitt bull that has been escaping from time to time eating compost. He had an orange peel in his mouth. The dog is the only logical conclusion I can come up with for the cause. I wonder if they don't feed him enough.

Well if it's a dog you say, go over his yard and look for the poop! The dogs don't digest the carrots though they do like to chew on them so you'll see the orange chunks in there. Haha. If you're determined...

Sounds human to me, carrots, esp deep ones aren't too easily pulled up as cleanly as you describe without the human "touch". Humans take them home and don't leave leftover evidence. Deer do munch on my carrot tops but I've never seen one pulled out of the ground.

There is leftover evidence though. I'll maybe take a picture today and show you guys if you think my logical conclusion of dog makes sense.
