I'm interested in connecting with other seed savers (particularly of edible crops) in my region. I'm a full-time, very small scale diversified direct-market farmer, farming together with my wife and the help of our children. Garden crops make up about half of the money-making part of our farm activity, covering 2+ acres/year. We try to save as much of our seed needs as we can. Toward that end we don't grow any hybrids, although we've thought about hybrids we could produce ourselves, and we've saved some seed from hybrids and unintentional crosses. I'm definitely interested in normal garden crops, but there are some less common crops that have become much loved staples for our family (roselle, yacons, summer spinach, etc.), and I'm also very interested in normal foods that aren't normally grown on a home scale (grains, oil seeds, pulses, etc.) I've gotten great ideas and advice and new-to-me seed varieties from one enthusiastic seed saver I've gotten to know, and I'd love to connect with others in the region. If you're a seed saver that might be open to sharing advice, talking, swapping seeds, etc., I'd be very happy to hear from you. -Eric

Have you checked in with the Seed Savers forum here and on all the Exchanges/Trade forums? Most have their location posted and some of the exchanges are regional too. Hope this helps. Dave

Dave, Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't posted on the Seed Saving forum yet, but maybe I should. The trouble I've found with trading forums is that, despite my initial assumptions, most of the people trading seed don't seem to be seed savers. I'm also not so much interested in trading for any particular seeds, but I do enjoy hearing about other seed savers' special projects and tried-and-true favorites. Thanks again, Eric

Hi Eric, Have you connected with Carolina Farm Stewardship Association? http://www.carolinafarmstewards.org -Anne

I saved rosemary seeds and basil and holy basil seeds last year. I'd love to trade with you. I am just learning how to save seeds. I want to grow mostly heirloom plants. I didn't have much luck on the seed exchange here. I got alot of seeds that didn't germinate.

Zackey, my wife grew holy basil for the first time this past year. I really liked the flavor. I wouldn't have thought any kind of basil would make a nice tea, but I thought the holy basil made an outstanding tea. I just saw in Southern Exposure's catalog that holy basil is supposed to be a different species from other basils (O. sanctum instead of O. basilicum.) I wonder if that means it won't cross with other basils. I also wonder what kind of isolation distance is necessary to prevent cross-pollination in basils that can cross-pollinate. Zackey, if you (or anyone else) wants to e-mail me directly, I'd be glad to hear about your interests, idea, recommendations, to explore potential for trades, etc. Anne, thanks for the suggestion. I am familiar with CFSA. As one of the farms that gave a pre-conference farm tour my wife and I got free passes to the annual conference one year, and we certainly hear about other things that CFSA does. I haven't, however, seen/recognized much in the way of opportunities with CFSA to connect with other seed savers, especially not the kind of small-scale seed savers that would presumably be more open to non-commercial kinds of information sharing and cooperation, etc. I think they host an annual seed swap, and I used to think seed swaps would bring a bunch of seed savers together, but my impression now is that seed swaps (speaking generally here about seed swaps everywhere) mostly just involve leftover and surplus commercial seed.
