Will the bugs be bad this summer if winter doesn't get colder?

Marchuary turns to Mapril (or Febpril?). Today we skiied in slush, and then I came home and worked in the garden and noticed that some of the weeds I left to hold the soil together are flowering already (so seeds can't be far behind. . . .weeding in February???). So what I'm wondering is if the mild temperatures will allow all the bugs to thrive and if this summer will make me wish I had more than my scissors to kill "bad" bugs with. What do you think?

Quite possibly, and a pertinent climatological concern. For those of us in coastal New England, of equal importance may be the atypical lack of snow cover, which also could lead to problems in spring. On the other hand, those weed seeds might develop to a certain point and then be destroyed by a particularly nasty bout of inclement weather, resulting in less weeding, and thus more time for slug patrol.

In the South/Midwest and even up to parts of the North/North-East there's going to be a lot more blight predicted for the spring/summer season...early and late.

A lot of states that normally get multiple hard freezes haven't even had a single extended period yet.

That's something to watch for in prone areas or areas near prone areas. Preventative measures (whatever antifungal you prefer) are going to be important this season in some areas unless Feb enjoys a serious cold snap.

...and speaking of winter events influencing spring/summer...I wish I could get to southern ARZ this March/April for wildflower season. They've had enough rain to get a pretty good display going on...hey, if you're close enjoy it now before invasive wild mustard makes the only wildflower color you see "yellow."

Sure. Warm weather is not going to be all roses. It is going to be like gardening in Kentucky around here, bug-wise.

We get plenty of cold in Maine, and they bugs do just fine. It's just as likely this weather will cause a premature hatch, and we could end up with less than normal. No way to know till we get there and see.

I would add that the mild winter weather allows for a longer period of activity for insect predators, so it might not be all bad.
