What doyou think of towels?

I'm usually pretty good at taking care of things in the garden, but since retiring, I seem to be traveling at peak times when something should be taken care of!
Right now we're just getting some frost, but still days in the 50-60s, so the weeds are going to town! I would go to the store and get a bunch of cardboard to cover them, but I'm heading out for another week and the weeds are really starting to go crazy!
What say I grab all my old towels (ready to donate or compost anyway) and cover the beds that aren't mulched with leaves yet (see above) or planted? The rain can still get through, and hopefully smother some of the weeds coming up? I can put layers of newspaper in spots not covered.
I've got a couple of hours tomorrow to take care of this, then it's packin the bathing suits and heading out! Heck with the garden! (unless we happen to find some wonderful gardens in St Croix or Antigua!) to visit!
Happy January all ;) Nancy
BTW I am serious about the towel question!
