How does one collect asparagus seeds? Might be for another forum, but will see what you all know here first!
Thanks,
Penny

Female asparagus will produce red berries containing about five black seeds. I wait until the outer shell is almost dry before picking. I recently read that male plants will sometimes produce seeds different from the others and give you only male plants.

The problem with raising Asparagus from non-hybrid seed is that you will end up with both male and female plants. Even F1 hybrids produce occasional female plants. Male plants are generally considered to produce superior spears.

SoTX I'm not clear how male plants can produce seeds. Do you have that reference? I'd be interested to read it.

I assume they mean that plants that were supposed to be males (But were in fact females) produced berries.

Several posts lately have claimed that some of their males were producing berries. They weren't, they were female plants. All the suppliers of the all-male varieties acknowledge that now and then one of the female plants slips through.
