What are these?

We moved into a house with a garden that was previously planted with sweet potatoes. It basically served as a groundcover. The leaves are glossy and dark green until the cooler weather caused them to die back.
In preparation for the spring, I decided to clear out the remaining vines and till the soil to amend it w/ some chicken manure. Surprisingly I dug up these tubers. They do not look like any sweet potatoes I've ever seen. Are these some strange variety or are these the usual russet potatoes that hid among the other vines all this time? I cut 1 up. The inside is whitish. Not sure if I want to eat 1.
