Someone is sending me alfalfa seeds. Do they have to be a certain kind to use for sprouts?

YES. The kind used for sprouts have been tested for bacteria -- ecoli and the like-- that could make you sick. If these are not that type, to be safe plant them outside.

It's easy to buy the tested kind from Pinetree and Johnny's.

Yes "elisa" I can totally agree. A kind for sprout has been tested for bacteria and many more.

I have never had a problem with sprouting mung and fenugreek seeds that I buy at the Indian grocery store. They cost a fraction of the price for tested seeds. However, I do not have an immunocompromised immune system.

I have also sprouted lentil and mung seeds from the store many times. If you are really worried, soak them in 1/10 water peroxide solution, or 1 tsp bleach per quart, a few minutes is enough. Most of the times I make sunflower shoots in compost trays, and I buy those, but only because the black ones sold for shoots lose their shell much more easily.
