Help with seed starting time

Posted by rgillham 7 GA (My Page) on Sun, Feb 7, 10 at 10:29
| A few weeks (or a couple months) ago i saw where someone had a software program (Excel) for seed starting and planting times. It would let you enter your zone and frost free date and then give you a breakdown of what to start with a date then planting dates, also what to start outside. At that time i thought i had downloaded the link and saved it, however that has been proven to not be true (i must be an idiot). For the last few days i have searched this forum to try and find it to no avail. If some one remembers it and could re-post the link i would be very grateful.
Thank you,
Shane |

| I know what post you're looking for. I myself saved one of the links. This one seemed the easiest to me. Also, I think Johnny's has a link on the top-right of their home page that is an Excel file. |

| Shane Since GardenWeb is still in the process of restoring some of the older files, I'm not surprised that you might not be able to find what you're looking for. This may or may not be what you're looking for, but if it isn't, why don't you Google "Excel garden plan". I got the link above from the site below. |

| milehighgirl and anney thanks for your response's. These appear to be different than the ones i was looking for. I will give them a try and hopefully have some success. I am trying to plan for the garden this year and needed to find information for what i need to start now, now that it is February and spring is around the corner. Last year i grew some Roma tomato's for the first time and the wife loved them so i will definitely do them again along with my Jalapeno peppers. I thinking of trying some squash again this year and hopefully the SVB does not attack again. I think i will try my hand at some cucumbers and a couple of cantaloupe plants, and maybe something else the family might eat. Again thanks alot for your help. Shane |

| Keep in mind that climates are different, you may start radishes 2 weeks before the last frost date in Iowa, but you can start them at any point in the winter in zones 8-10. Generally as you go towards warmer climates, the weather warms up more gradually in the spring. If you can find a starting guide from a local nursery or something, that could help, here is one from the SFO area: http://www.commongroundinpaloalto.org/plantingcalendar.htm I keep a journal in Excel with the date counting up as I go down column A, with columns labeled "Date Weather Comments Activity Harvest Reminders" Date: is the date. Weather: anything notable, frost, rain, heat wave... Comments: anything that doesn't go in the other columns, like X came up, Y is flowering. Activity: What I did that day, planting, transplanting, tilling, ect. Harvest: what was harvested. Reminders: this is the only column other than date that is filled out in advance. I started with typical suggestions for starting dates, ect, and based on the results of the previous year I may change it for the next. Mid-winter I cut and paste the reminder column from the previous year into the new year. |

| For those who wish to know their 'last frost' date you may go to Weather Network for your town. They also identify your hardiness zone. Or google 'last frost date' and select the closest town. |

| After finding the Weather Network forecast for your town, look uner the Lawn & Garden forecast to see your zone. |

| My Excel file allows entry of your average last frost date which automatically calculates appropriate dates. The headings in the file are: Vegetable Season Transplantability Seed depth (in) Days to germination Soil temp range (F) Early indoor start date Late indoor start date Weeks from start to transplant Safe to Set Out (from frost date) Seed/Transplant Date Enter your 'Average Last Frost Date' and hit 'enter' to generate all the calculations. The spreadsheet is formatted for 8.5" x 14" paper so easy to read if printed. You can reformat as 8.5" x 11" in landscape view if desired. Available on request via email with subject as "Seed Start" |

I am also in GA (north Atlanta area). From my local forum, I gateher that now is about the time to start warm weather stuff. I have done just a few of each indoor and some in cold frame. When the ones started indoor get to a certain size, I will take them to the cold frame. To my experience, GERMINATION is the bigger factor than growth. This is specially true about eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, basils. I can always direct sow some more later. |
