I have a 3x3 raised bed and I was thinking of planting sweet potatoes with peanuts in close proximity to each other. Does anyone see any issues with this? I've never grown either before!

Wel, the sweetpotatoes will be ok...peanuts not as much. The peanuts likely will be covered up unless you can keep the sweetpotato vines all running in the other direction.

If you have a single 3x3 bed, those sweet potato vines are going to take up a lot of space - where will the peanuts go?
|
Agree. Sweet potatoes alone will quickly take over such a small bed crowding out anything else and even running out over the yard. Not to mention the problems of nutrient and water competition. Dave

If you trellis the sweetpotato vines, you might be able to pull it off depending on how many sweetpotato slips you planted. The in-the-ground part of the sweetpotato plant will eventually take up to 18x18 inches if you're lucky. I get three or four tubers the size of half gallon jugs on one plant sometimes. So if you did two sweets, one on each opposite corner, you'd have the other corners to do peanuts. But you might have shading from the trellised vines, which might stunt the peanuts. I suppose you could do two sweets, side by side, with trellis, on the North side and then peanuts side by side on the South side. It might still be fun to try if you only want one or two sweetpotato slips. But if you wanted four sweets, then that would fill the underground portion of the area, if you're lucky. I grew sweets on hilled rows six feet apart one year and put two rows of peanuts in between. The sweets were ready to harvest before the peanuts were, but there was plenty of room, and it would have been successful if the peanuts were planted earlier (early April) than the sweets (late May). I have too many imported weeds now to do that.
