Starting Vegetable Seeds in Closet

I just started growing corn, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, cabbage, lettuce, and peas from seeds and was wondering about light. I started them in my bedroom closet which has a door to the attic which keeps the closet around 73F, but this is just for a warm environment for them to get out of the dirt. Once there popping out of the dirt I was wondering if I should put them out side for the light since I don't have any grow lights inside?

I started the Broccoli on the 22nd of Feb. and it germinated 4 days early. Today I decided to put them outside to get some sun. How much sun and long should I keep them out side for the light?

You probably need indirect sun for the first few days. A sunny room would be fine. Then gradually introduce them to the direct sun.

I don't know the temps or sun intensity where you are in Z9 but you might fry them. They need to be hardened off.

I'll have to check the temps of the backyard tomorrow. But I might just go to Homedepot and get some shop lights.

So far 12/14 broccoli, 11/14 cauliflower, 6/7 cabbage and 10/21 lettuce have germinated. Broccoli/Cauliflower are 4 days early and cabbage is around 6 days early and lettuce is right on the dot.

You might want to read through all the detailed how-to FAQs over on the Growing from Seed forum here. That is where questions such as this are most often discussed - especially at this time of year. You'll find FAQs there on the lighting needed as well as pics of various ways to set up your lights.

Thank for the suggestion's. I still have some trays that have not germinated yet, should I just put those outside. Would these do better with the sunlight unlike the ones that are grown inside? The temps in the garden during the day get's up to high 60's to low 70's.

Out of those you mentioned, lettuce needs light to germinate and should be very shallowly sown.

I start all my brassicas (broccoli, cauli, cabbages, etc.) INDOORS, under lights. It's just so much easier to control.

I also do the same for almost all my veggies. Peas and cucurbits(melons, squashes, cukes) can be directly sown usually.

Peppers and tomatoes should have warm temps(heat mats come in handy here(around 80-85F). and then all should be put under shoplights after germination.

An economical setup is a 4 foot fixture at the big box stores and 2 T8 or T12 bulbs("daylight" bulbs, 6500k). Total cost= around 20-30 bucks. Keep plants about an inch or 2 above plants to prevent seedlings from getting "leggy for about 12-18 hours/day.

Good luck.
