Should I be seeing garlic yet? (upstate NY)

Anybody know when garlic should start coming up in zone 6 ny? So far I don't see any signs. I seem to recall last year I was already seeing some sprouts from my garlic by the end of Feb, but I could be mistaken. I do have narcissus starting to come up already and even some tulips. Anyone?

Obviously you are in different part of upstate NY. I'd just like to see ground without snow cover (which is getting deeper by the minute just now).I rarely see sprouts of anything before mid March - some years not until April.

I planted in October and had sproats in Dec. This is normal in zone 6 MA. They have been buried in snow since. When did you plant your garlic? How deep did you plant it?

The way it works is, if you plant early enough they may poke through before freezing weather sets in, here until about Dec. 1, give or take. Or they poke through when the weather warms up, here March 15-31, give or take. What they will not do is grow when the ground is frozen. Last year was an exceptionally warm late winter, it means nothing.

Ditto what glib said. I have sprouts but I planted in October and had sprouts shortly after, then snow for three months now sprouts are a bit bigger but no significant growth. I took this photo of them today. |

Okay - I guess that means my garlic might be in trouble...? I remember last year seeing sprouts poking through the snow. Not seeing anything this year so far. Maybe I planted too late..... Well, hopefully they'll come up.

Oops - just re-read the posts in more detail. I did plant late, so I guess it's possible the ground froze before they sprouted this year. Planted late last year too, though, but it might have stayed warmer longer. As for now, it's still frozen if you go down a few inches, but not super hard. I would have thought they'd be trying to push up if my Narcissus are already doing that, but maybe not... Well, we'll see.....

Yes, I'm sure they are just fine. In fact, I'm willing to bet that as soon as the ground thaws a little bit, if you were to get out and try to dig one up, you would find them firmly rooted into the ground. Don't over think it, nature knows what it's doing ;) Good luck with your garlic!
