Newbie here. I bought a house with an 8x4 raised.garden. It had been functional two summers ago, but I let it go last summer due to surgery and couldn't do much. It has some but not overgrown with weeds. What would be the steps you'd take to get this garden in workable order? Do I need to replace all of the soil, or can I do some things to regenerate what I have? Thanks!

Pull the weeds and till in 2-3 inches of compost with some added bone meal(slow breaking down to usable nutrients) ought to be a good start without a soil test. Keep moist and in a couple months should be fine. Just my opinion. Kevin

Agree with Kevin. Remove the weeds and mix in 2-3" of high quality compost. Examine it first, smell it, feel it, ask about the ingredients, make sure no weed killers were incorporated into it. Then during the season use more of the compost to top dress the plants and cover with a good mulch like straw or hay. Next fall spread another 2-3 inches on top and let it work itself in. Contact your local county ag extension office to arrange for a soil test to see if additional additives are needed. Dave

Yes what Kevin said, and every fall after your veggies (or whatever) are done for the year, pull it all out, put down more compost, mulch, and let it sit all winter. Then the next spring it will be even better soil than the year before and ready for planting. Keep doing this every year and you'll have the best soil in the neighborhood.

And use the weeds pull , except for the roots of perennials, to start a compost heap. They grew with nutrients in your garden, so it makes sense to put them back in there.
