Plowing a field - Help

I own a nice several acre piece of land in Baltimore County which I am not using at present and want to plant something on. It strikes me the best way to plow it up is with a real farm tractor. Anyone have an idea how to get access to one? Are there rentals that I could use? Or are there farmers that might do this for me for some fee? Any ideas?

Real mold board plows are getting rare thrsr days. Perhaps there is a small farmer or gardener that still does some plowing that way. I agree that an initial plowing that way can make a nice start where there is sod, but some grass may re-emerge.

After the first time, I think it is better to leave the residue near the top and prepare the soil some other way.....even though plowing makes such a fine surface for gardening.

I'll bet you COULD find someone to plow the area for you. Craig's list is probably a great place to start.

If the ground isn't frozen, can you get a soil sample analyzed first? That way, if the soil needs fertilizer or any "adjustments", you can spread them out so they can be plowed under and save yourself some trouble.

Your county extension service or soil conservation office very likely can direct you to a farmer in your neighborhood who will plow your land for a reasonable cost. Otherwise ask around places frequented by farmers, such as feed and seed stores or other farm supplies vendors. Lots of these folks know each other and you just follow the grape vine.

Ask around in your area. Word of mouth is a great way to find someone to till for you.

My husband uses his tractor to till several neighbors gardens.
He does it for free as he enjoys working outside and helping people.

Before we bought the tractor, we paid a guy to bush hog our property. We happened to see a sign outside his house advertising his services.

Post a notice in the nearest coop; this would be quick work for a farmer, and they could always use a few extra bucks. Don't turn over more than you intend to use, though, or you might end up with a great patch of thistle. Spoken from experience! :-O
