Snow or shelling peas...?

So I planted some peas a ways back- I thought I planted Mr.big peas shelling peas, but there's a chance I may have planted snow peas in with them... Now I have some pea pods that are either snow peas ready to pick, or shelling peas that haven't developed yet. Any idea which I've got here? And if I do happen to pick the shelling peas early & cook them up as if they were snow peas, is there anything wrong with doing that? And yes, next time I'll pay better attention to labeling and knowing where I've planted things...

Pick one and taste it. If it's sweet and crunchy then it's a snow pea. If the pod is a little tough or fibrous it's a shelling pea. Once you figure out which it is, you should be able to tell the difference between the snow and shelling peas just by comparing them to each other. They will look slightly different. Rodney

Agree just take a bite of the pod in your pic and you'll know which it is. :) If I had to bet I'd say snow pea in the pic. Dave

I say snow also. Love snow peas! I wouldn't ever grow shellies -- too much work. Kevin

Ugh, Kevin, we'll have to disagree there! I hate snow peas, they taste so strong. But fresh peas just shelled, mmmmm. :) as for which it is in the pic, no clue, you'll have to bite it and see.

If you try to shell snow or snap peas after the hulls swell, they don't pop right open like shelling peas.

By this time you should know, But Mr Big should have a much longer pod that stage. It is a big pea. |

I go for SNOW also. But I like sugar snaps best. Snow peas are good in Chinese stir fry. O' I just remembered ; I got to move and plant my peas ..TOMORROW. We are going to have a couple weeks of nice weather. per forecasts.

I tried the taste test method- definitely snow peas! Thanks everyone! I did try to grow snap peas too but half of them died when we got an unseasonable heat wave, but the survivors seem to be recovering. The snow peas are doing very well, glad I know what they are now, and should be able to tell them apart once the shelling peas start producing.
