Need help with beans

Last year we had Alternaria pod spot that infected most of our green beans. It was on a few of the cowpeas but did not damage the peas inside the hull.
How can I stop the damage this year?
Are there varieties that are resistant?
Thank you for your help. |

| The U. of Florida has a paper on the problem, and the prevention seems to be adequate nitrogen in the soil and air circulation between the plants. They also suggest that you pick and destroy any affected pods as soon as you see them. They didn't mention resistant varieties, but I bet there are some! |

| Were you planting bush beans or pole beans? I know nothing about this disease, but if you need more nitrogen in the soil, maybe you could plant sugar snap peas first or a cover crop that would put nitrogen back in the soil? I don't know if this would work in your zone, but I planted alyssum in between the bush beans last year to attract beneficial insects and shade the soil/keep the weeds down...it also looked nice :) Maybe that would help with your air circulation? |
