Question;Do I us black visqueen plastic or black landscaping fabric for preparing the soil for planting sweet potatoes up north?

If your purpose in using black plastic is to warm the soil, use the visqueen. It will warm soil far better.

Landscaping fabric actually cools the soil slightly, in my experience. Definitely don't use it for sweet potatoes. Go with the black plastic or better still, infrared-transmitting plastic.

One of the problems I've found with growing sweet potatoes in the north is the low night-time temps. Here in my area the night gets down to 50's, high 40's, even in July and August. Sweet Potatoes need heat to make the tubers....lots of it, and for 24 hours a day. So what happens to me is that the plant above the ground grows very well and looks healthy....but come harvest time, when you dig them up, the potatoes are very slender, useless things. This year I'm trying a portable pup-tent, green-house contraption over the bed and see if that helps.

Definitely clear or solar type plastic to warm the soil, and then some sort of row tunnel to hold heat in during the night is my recommendation. Your zone 6 so it shouldn't be nearly as hard to hold the heat in as it is for me.

Where I am, there is no lack of heat for growing sweetpotatoes even on bare soil. They can get huge here.

Wayne, what variety(s) do you grow? I'm in zone 6 a/b in Indiana also and plan to grow sweet potatoes for the first time this year.

I plant mostly O'Henry which is a smooth light yellow. Other decent ones are Beauregard and Covington orange ones. For bush Vardman might be ok.

Here is a link that might be useful: Sweetpotatoes
