Timing direct sowing of brassicas and scallions

Those of you in the Piedmont growing areas of the Mid-Atlantic--do you direct seed any of your brassicas and if so how early is feasible? I've been in the habit of sowing seed indoors and setting out transplants, but it seems like our temps rapidly rise into zones that promote bolting. I'm talking about mustard, Asian greens, turnip greens, etc, not head cabbages.

Other question is when is the best/earliest time to direct sow onion seed for scallions only?

Last frost date for me is first week of May, but I never set out anything requiring frost free growing until after Mother's Day.
