I realize this is probably a regional or local question, but in general I am wondering whether I can reliably find rhubarb and/or asparagus starts at my local nursery or farmer's markets? I don't think I've ever seen them in either place. Just wondering if there is an online source I might be able to check out, or if folks have recommendations on ways to find local folks who want to share. Thanks!

| Down here they sell both in the garden center at Walmart, Home Depot and Lowes plus in a few of the local nurseries. The Walmart sells 2 of the jersey varieties asparagus as well as Purple passion and 2 different varieties of rhubarb. Have grown them all with no issues (other than the usual problems with trying to grow rhubarb in the south. :) Online - Gurneys, Harris, and Henry Fields all carry both and I have grown orders from them in the past, again with no problems. | I know this year, lowes is a few bucks more than home depot. My home depot and stores have: onion sets, potato, strawberry, asparagus, and a lot more like raspberries, grapes, etc. |

Lucille - they will be seasonal offerings so in your zone they might not have them out on the shelves yet. If not just ask them when they will be in. Dave

My local nursery has gotten in their onion/potato sets as well as asparagus crowns (even had 2yr old crowns). Big box stores had 1yr crowns... found some at Home Depot a week ago that I may take back after seeing the crowns from the nursery place. The nursery crowns had growing points on them... were larger and not as dry. Price was comparable $4 for 3 crowns @ box stores vs $1.30 per crown at nursery.

Wow, older crowns would be great! I might call around to a few other nurseries too. My one here in town is pretty small scale. Thanks for all the advice!
