sweet potato starts

Cheers to a great bunch of people. I have been lurking for a couple of years and learning a vast amount from you all. I have made a discovery that may be useful to others, and I have not seen it mentioned.

I've always had mixed luck with getting sweet potatoes to sprout, even when using organic potatoes. Some years they

pop right out, other years nothing happens (except some slimy potatoes after a few months!) Our cool house may be partly to blame. So, the last three years, I have been providing bottom heat and bright light. I get sprouts within a few days. I use the pilot light on my gas stove, with a fluorescent desk lamp above it, but a heating pad and a shop light set-up would work just as well.

Wishing all an exuberant spring.
