Let asparagus go?

Hi all - I am new to asparagus growing and want to make sure I am doing it right. I have planted the crowns, and they have put up the first shoots. Some of the shoots are almost 18" tall, while others are still fairly short. They have all ferned out. Do I just let them go now? I have read to cut them back in either early winter or very early next spring - do I let the shoots just keep growing taller? How tall will they get? And a question for next year - they "ferned out" fairly short - will they do this differently next season? In other words, will they get taller before they start to fern? Thanks in advance! Hope my questions make sense!
