Blood meal for Corn

I'm going to be experimenting this year with planting more corn closer to each other then I did last year. This year I will be doing two 10' rows that will be spaced 2' apart with 3 plants per sqft each plant will be 8"-12" apart. Last year I did 3 10' rows spaced 2'-3' apart with 1 plant per sqft. I know that plants will be competing for food and water. So with the fertilizer, do I double or triple the amount. The blood meal package says 1 cup per 10 sqft.

You are setting yourself up for some poor pollination problems with that layout so you'll likely have to hand pollinate to compensate. Suggest a review of the many other corn planting discussions here..

Blood meal has to be used carefully or you end up with weak, soft stalks and crop collapse, The amount of application is the same regardless of the way you choose to plant.

Well like I said its a experiment. I just assume that this would be better then the setup from last year. Last year it was only 10 plants in each of 3 rows. I did 2 crops of corn. The first in April I did hand pollinating with a tooth brush. The second crop in July I just left alone and let the wind do its job. Both time I got around 25 ears.

So the rate of application doesn't change even when you go from 1 plant/sqft to 3 plants/sqft.

No as I said, the amount remains the same. You would never triple the amount of any fertilizer used within a defined area just because more plants are put there. Overloading an area with fertilizer is a good way to burn up crops. More is not always better.

Rather you may find you have to apply it more often. But that depends on many other variables like watering regimen, soil fertility other than the meal, etc.

Corn is normally planted in block squares, not long narrow rows, for very good reasons. That would be easy to do in your layout pictured above. So why try to force it away from the norm?

How would you apply the side dressing with the block planting? I normally use the hoe and make a small trench to the side of the planting row so I can apply the blood meal at knee high stage and again at tassle stage.

I'll have to search the forum to see how the corn block look like.
