A Forum For Whining.......

cugal

GW is loaded with different forums, but I'm still going to propose a "Whining Forum"........ I'm talking about this brutal winter!!! NE Kansas expects wind chill temps of -30F........ We simply don't get temps like this in Kansas in March! All my grow lights are in use in my shop & I have a number of plants in my (somewhat) heated GH & I'm holding on for dear life...

If you really want to do some whining, go over to the bean forum and read where Luther is going to pick luscious green beans in a couple more days. And to top it off, he added a snapshot of them. Now that hurts.

What a perfect idea, cugal. We woke up yesterday to -35C (-46C with windchill), which was actually *up* from the -52C windchill it registered before sunrise. I didn't even bother looking at the thermometer or the forecast today. Once it gets to a certain temp, it just doesn't matter anymore.

Little houses with yards big enough for gardens in central florida are cheaper than the cost of materials right now. Just retire a little early, and you can start whining about 30 degree frosts instead of 30 below...

Well, I'm not quite up to full fledge whining, but it is snowing here again today. Hasn't done this here since the 80s. I don't think I'll be getting those potatoes in by St. Patricks Day judging by the long range forecast... My ground is still frozen so I haven't even thought of picking up the seed potato yet anyway. I wonder if this means we'll be in for a cooler summer too? I wouldn't mind one of those.

All you need to do is take up cross country skiing!

We're having the best ski year ever. We had a thaw yesterday, which allowed me to get in the garden and harvest mache, cabbage, turnips, carrots and parsnips, so now the fridge is full and the snow fell all night, and my skis are waxed and ready to go.

Plus, I figure it'll be a great year after this heavy input of "poor man's nitrogen" (aka snow)

I haven't seen snow in 27 years and I still whine when it gets cold down here.

OK, then, I'll whine too ! Even southern California winters are hard for me-hard to breathe and I ache from cold wind. Plus, I all but foam at the mouth wanting to get the tomatoes going !
In summer I gripe about the heat... Don't I sound like a laugh a minute???

Tired of winter. Still waiting to plant peas and potatoes. Lettus seedlings are getting too big for their tiny cells.
Mâché Is the only thing thrives in this miserable winter. I'll remember to plant a lot of mâché next year.

Whining is in season, I guess. Why not ! Here in PNW, we are tired of 6 month of rain, drizzles and more rain, little or no sunshine. Not too cold but temperature in 30s and 40 (AND RAIN !!) linger on like til eternity. You midweterners and northeasterners soon (ina couple of months !!)are going to have gorgeous sunny weather but we, the extreme northwesterners, are going to be in the same (rain and more rain) situation.
I think it is enough for now. I feel a lot better: (grin)

Spring has come early this year for us, which is always a bad sign. averaging in the 50's for the past few weeks means well be in 30's and under blanket of snow for april...just like last year.

  • emorems0

An early Spring is no good either, that happened here 2 years ago... we had an early spring and then a late hard frost - killed nearly all the buds on my pear trees and my lilac bush lost them all. I didn't have a single lilac on mother's day that year :(

They are expecting this cold weather to stick around through Spring this year in the east... we may have some sunny days, but it will still be too cold to plant for a lot longer than typical. I think I'm going to start scrounging through my recyclables to put together a bunch of make-shift cloches so I can still attempt to plant on time.

I have given up planting any summer veggie. I will just buy plants at the market when the time comes (zucchini and beans will still be direct seeded). Here we will have snow on the ground until April at least, and no above freezing temperatures at least until the 19th.

I am a world class whiner and therefore, I thought I would excel on a whining forum. I usually whine about my wife. I am into edible landscaping and she leans toward flowers and flowering trees. I had a dogwood tree that was too close to the house and I wanted to plant a pomagranite and a blackberry bush in its place. I cut the dogwood down, dug out the roots and stump and planted the bushes. Wifey recovers the stump and roots and replants in a place I wanted to put my elderberries. I whined and she laughed. I sometimes whine about the squirrels. After I planted a bunch of fruit trees and bushes, I negotiated an aggreement with the squirrels to only take their fair share of the fruit. When the squirrels started taking most of the fruit I whined to the wife. She laughed and said the squirrels are smater than I am. I bought a live trap. The squirrels formed an alliance with the ground squirrels to steal the bait from the live trap. I whined and the wife laughed. To top it all off the squirrels convinced the crows to start taking fruit. Now I really started whining. The wife said, "If it flies or if it climbs trees, it is smater than you." I bought an air rifle. Now I can't decide whether to shoot the squirrels, the crows, or the wife? A whiner's life is so difficult!

Wow do I have a lot to whine about....I'll keep it garden related.

    1.I have wicked cabin fever!
    2. We've had 114.5" of snow this season (about 9" over the average.) We'll still get more before spring has finally sprung here.
    3. We're still having sub zero temperatures - nevermind the windchill.

    4. I accidentally killed just about all of my seedlings!!! I am not a rookie gardener either! I either overwatered; gave to much plant food and or the wrong plant food! I did just restart most. Fortunately there's still time (yes, I started early because of the cabin fever.)

    5. Add some personal issues in there and I'm one giant stress ball. One more issue comes up and I'm hopping in my car and driving until I find warmth!

Please pass the cheese (it'll go well with my whine).

My heating bills are huge, my car gas mileage is horrible, my garage is full of road salt (disgusting), there is 2 feet of snow on the ground. The avg temp is almost 40F and we'll be lucky to hit that once in the next 7 days (although it does look a lot better then it has been)...and...the extended range continues to below normal temps for all of us east of the Mississippi River... yippee!

I can not believe we were getting ice from the sky in March down here in North Texas. Am I crazy or has the weather been going nutty lately. Usually by this time it is warming up here. You could almost start your garden a week early before spring starts because you could trust the fact the deep coldness has really retired in the beginning of March ya just had to worry about the night time temperatures to wonder if it is a good time to plant or not. Nope the weather has been unusual. They say you can not predict the weather in Texas but golly geez I do not remember getting powdered with snow or ice so late into the months. Now I am trying to figure out what I am going to do about that crazy squirrel. The little Smarty strip my pecan tree last year. I am planning to plant black berries and I do not need that squirrel having a feast over there either.

Well, I not sure if my whining had any impact, but I'm still going to take credit for our rising temps in NE Kansas......... 55F today, supposed to be 70F Monday......... Only problem is, it's going to snow Saturday.......... Go figure!

    Thanks for the laugh! :).

I am whining for lack of winter which accounts for my future lack of fruit whining!

Yup, I called it. Spring had sprung too early and now were getting dumped on...again. It had better not carry over to April, I am really getting sick of the snow. On the plus side, spring snow in Denver rarely sticks for more then a day, 2 at the most, I'm trying my hardest to see silver linings here.

My only whine is that we have a drought! I have a well, though, so no restrictions. It's being monitored cause a new casino went in less than 2 miles from us (now THAT'S something to whine about!) and all seem fine so far!
Except for 2 weeks of crazy freezing in Oct/Nov that killed many of my potted plants and flowers, and also damaged some of my winter crops, our weather has been just lovely! 60s and 70s most of the winter!
I would love some cheese with that whine! Nancy

    Reminds me of a Joke

Government surveyors came to Ole's farm in the fall and asked if they could do some surveying. Ole agreed and Lena even served them a nice meal at noon time. The next spring, the two surveyors stopped by and told Ole, "Because you were so kind to us, we wanted to give you this bad news in person instead of by letter."

Ole asked, "What is the bad news?"

The surveyors said, "Well, after our work we discovered your farm is not in Minnesota , but is actually in North Dakota !"

Ole looked at Lena and said, "That's the best news I have heard in a long time, why I just told Lena this morning, I don't think I can take another winter in Minnesota."

Best thread ever. Is it still possible to squeeze in a little whine? It was 53F today, and 1/3 of the snow is gone. Tomorrow 10 inches of fresh snow will replace them, then it will go down to 0F during the night.

Oh boy another cold front came in. It was 80 yesterday dropped to 47 degrees last night with some nasty gusty winds. I only hope my blackberries I planted over the weekend will do okay.

I think This might be our last cold front.

Almost planting time. I so plan to do so this weekend. I see warm days ahead.

Deeby, I don't think that is qualified for whining ! :D

Currently, we are having nice weather, sunny, warm(High 60F), but it is not going to last so I take this opportunity to whine about the future RAIN and DRIZZLE. hehe

  • booberry85

It was 50 degrees yesterday (warm for upstate/central NY!) We're expecting freezing rain and then a foot of snow today! Mother Nature has a quirky sense of humor.

Zach, I'm far south of you near Pikes Peak. My plants are coming up. Hoping the flowering trees and bushes keep their sanity, lost most last year to late frosts. They must be as confused as we are with temps of 20s to 70s from one day to the next. Spring snows and temps are going to be interesting. Hopefully this spring brings us back to plenty of rainy days. Snow, as you said, doesn't bother me. Ice another issue.

To add to the whining. ..I can finally see my garden from under 2 feet of snow, and my hands are itching to get dirty..and then..sigh its 18 dgrees once more..sniffel and whine.

  • glib

Yesterday, 8 fresh inches, so the garden is still 20 inches under. Last night, 2F with howling winds. Not happy. Normally, I would plant arugula, lettuce and peas this Saturday.

Okay I'm back for some more whine. This is potato planting days for sure and I for sure won't be planting any potatoes yet! Now they are calling for below freezing temperatures and snow on Monday. I think I am moving beyond whining into swearing.

I normally have my tomatoes and such starting now, and would have probably even planted out my onions and ilk, thus making room under the lights for said tomatoes, but no go. Maybe if I hold tight just one more week...

This thread is so funny! Thank you all for the laughs! I need it since I just came home from 2 weeks in sunny, warm, southern Arizona to this snow covered frozen hell of a NY winter. I have seeds started indoors and saw the first return of a red winged blackbird. Stupid bird shoulda stayed south.

  • booberry85

Ok, I'm not done whining about the weather. We will have the next 3 days in the 40's. Hurray!!! However, after that we're back down into the 20's and 30's again, with night time temps dipping into single digits. What is up with this weather already?! 4 months of single digit temperatures is enough! This is cold even by NY standards.

  • sunnibel7 Md 7

Booberry, I feel you. I moved south to get away from NY winters. And here I am the day after St. Paddy's day with 6 inches of fresh snow. I'm having horrible flashbacks. It should melt today, but still. Maybe THIS will be the week it doesn't snow? And maybe even warms up and dries out so I can get started already?

My hot peppers right now more then a foot tall. flowering and branching... Good news? No, bad) They have 2 more inches to grow to overgrow the window I have for them... And I can't even set up my portable heated green house on the deck as usual - the heater is no match to freezing temps that expected for at least 3-4 more weeks...
    And ground is still frozen...
I try to convince my tomatoes to slow down... Looks like they do not understand either English or Russian)
