| I'm new to the wonderful world of vegetable gardening but have planted the same veggies for the last 3 years. The 1st year was AMAZING, I couldn't belive how well it grew! The second year was good, but the third year was not so good. I did learn about rotating the crops by my third year but for some reason the first row grew about halfway up the row, the second grew a little further than that, and so on and so forth. So, it the end, my garden had a larch "arch" design to it. The veggies that did grow weren't the best but were still good. Does anyone have any ideas on what could have caused this? I plant directly in the ground but was considering doing raised beds this year in hopes that I wouldn't have to worry about putting so much time into a garden that doesn't thrive. I appreciate your help and happy gardening!! :) |

| What kinds of veggies did you plant? Are you plowing, tilling or loosening the soil with a fork (etc)? Are you using any kind of fertilizers? What kind of watering system? Did those years have more or less the same kind of weather? Three thoughts: 1) Maybe your soil nutrient level is dropping and not being replaced; 2) A watering problem? 3) An insect problem like nematodes, wireworms, symphylans, etc. More info is required. | The 3rd year I planted in this order: Radishes, green onions, carrots, bell peppers, cucumbers, zuchinni, watermelon, peas, then corn. I planted it all in an area about 10x30. The area was tilled with a rototiller with some "garden" soil sold in bags at Home Depot incorporated. I then placed a layer of fresh bagged garden soil, placed the seeds, and added another layer of garden soil on top. I water using an impact tripod sprinkler, which I've used the 2 years prior, and the season seemed to be the same. I appreciate your help!! :) |
