What's safe to plant outside of fence?

My garden is too small, so rather than move the fence, I thought I would plant some things outside of the fence that might not be bothered by critturs. Like winter squash, which grew outside the fence voluntarily last year, and was not eaten. Also I think kale, parsnips and tomatillos might be safe. Any thoughts about the advisability of this?

Onions, garlic, tomatillos, eggplants.
Both deer and rabbits will go for kale and parsnips.

It depends. Here in the Goiter Belt they will leave brassicas alone. I have observed this many times (groundhog, though, go for it). They are marginally iodine deficient, and brassicas (which are goitrogenic) may get them sick. Here they will eat beet, chard, chicory first.
