Need advice about companion planting in a tight space (3'x5)'

Hello,

I am trying to make something happen in the 3'x5' space.

I am a beginner, so I'm looking to experiment and try things out. This is mostly for fun and for the kids, so we are planting from seeds and trying to make the best of it. My biggest success so far was with the sweet peas.

Based on my research on companion planting, it looks like cucumbers, peas, beans, sunflowers, radishes, carrots, and corn can work together. Out of those, sweet peas are a must. Cucumbers, beans and sunflowers would be nice as well. I never tried growing corn.

I have following seeds and tried growing them with various degrees of success:

Sweet Peas
Provider Bush Bean
Kentucky Pole Bean
Marketmore 76 Cucumber
Giant Sunflower
Various carrots and radishes
Snow Peas
Regular peas

The area is well protected from little critters. The soil has a healthy amount of Leafgro Hummus in it (http://www.homedepot.com/buy/leafgro-40-lb-hummus-leaf.html#.UTQBKDe- RNp). I ran into it in the store and got sold on the 100% Organic label.

Any advice on plant selection and spacing is greatly appreciated. I will be extremely grateful for any other helpful tips. I love growing things.

put a trellis at the back. grow peas, cucumbers or polebeanson it.
but don't plant then till there is no chance of frost.
Instead plant raddish where you would plant them at the base of the trellis. the raddish will be done by it's time to plant beans or cukes,
you can plant carrot near the front of the box. away from the trellis
you haven't got much room there, just know that crowding it too much won't produce more, it will just cause trouble

Thank you for your response!

How many of each kind of plan would you recommend to avoid over crowding?

Corn is so easy!! Plant at least two rows close together for pollination. Use mineral oil for corn borers or whatever they are called. Open the ear and apply some mineral oil.

I would say to stay away from corn with that limited amount of space unless you wanted to just fill it with virtually nothing but corn. You need to plant a lot of corn close together to get good ears, and in such a small area I doubt you could get enough stalks and still have room for anything else.

My advice would be to plant by size facing south. Tallest crop (the sunflowers) go in back, your medium crop in the middle (the peas), and then your small crop around the edges (radishes, carrots, etc). That way nothing should be shading out anything else.

One thing I would suggest is things that will make the enjoyment a little better for the kids would be thinks like radishes...they are fun to eat and easy to grow and take up little space...use them as a border on one short side...another suggestion is greens...so good for you and so easy to grow...a good way to get kids to eat their greens. One of my favorite things to grow is spinach....
