How to make cow pots

Hi,

Anyone ever tried this? I would think it would be like making paper... shred up scraps of paper.. soak in water... add a binder and some composted manure... paint the paste onto the outside of a plastic up... place another on top for a tight fit.. let dry.

Questions are- what to use for a binder that will keep the cow pot together long enough through the seedling stage to compost into the garden yet not fall apart before hand. Also, what ratio of composted manure to paper pulp to use.

I realize we're all busy with the spring planting season. I'm no exception. Probably don't have time to think about it. However, it could be a cool hobby for those "indoor" months.

The funny thing about cow pots are... might be fun to make, but I wouldn't want my friends to catch me doing it. They might think I've gone over the edge. ;)

A wet mixture like that, sandwiched between plastic cups, would take forever to dry. Paper, including molded pulp containers such as egg cartons, is made by spreading the wet pulp on screens. Water is then drained or squeezed from the screen and the paper is removed and dried, usually by pressing with heat.

Drat... doesn't sound like something I'd want to tackle in a residence. Notice I didn't say "my kitchen". ;)

Thanks, Jim! I'll keep poking around to see what I can come up with that's more "do-able".

Cheers,
Erin

If you think making manure pots in your kitchen might be stinky, the CowPot guys BAKE the manure pots to make them rigid...

"OMG, HONEY! WHAT'S THAT AWFUL SMELL?"

I take newspaper, tear lengthwise in 5" wide strips, wrap the strips around a vitamin bottle or tomato past can (leave one edge even w/ the top of the can, let the rest hang over). Close up the bottom by folding and smushing. They seem to stay together well enough to fill w/ seed starter mix, as long as you pack a tray w/ them so they stand up once full. I guess you could water w/ compost tea...

Hi, I don't know where you live, but if you are in a tropical area like me (Costa Rica), you could try what I am about to try: Cow dung and banana sap as binder. Have you ever cut a plantain from the plant? It starts oozing this sticky sap that won't even go away with soap. We also have rubber trees somewhere in the property. And when our coconut palms start producing, I'll use coconut husk fibers. In fact, they already make pots out of pure coconut fiber (coir), and they stay together, so cow dung and coir MUST make a great pot. I'll try with pure sun-dried manure moulded around a pot first. Then I'll try manure sandwich beween two pots, pressed and then sun-dried, and then I'll try adding plantain sap to see which is better.
