Propagating/rooting brussel sprouts?

Has anyone heard of propagating brussel sprouts from just the sprouts? I couldn't find anything about this on the Internet.

The reason I ask is, sometime last year we bought a bag of brussel sprouts from Costco. A lot of them didn't look good once we chopped them in half so we decided to just toss them onto the ground under our lemon tree hoping they would compost.

Just yesterday I looked and, while most of them are gone, a couple of them actually seem to have new green areas and one looks like it has small roots. I was very surprised and thought for sure there was no way they could grow from just the sprouts (chopped in half too).

Anyway, I guess I'll let them grow and see what happens!

Tree Collards are a brassica that is propagated primarily vegetatively, in fact I am rooting cuttings right now.

You take the flower shoots that spring up in the crotch between the leaf & main stem and just plant them. They seem to be doing fabulously. Leaves on the shoots haven't even wilted, but I don't see any roots yet.

Brussels sprouts will sometimes produce roots around the cut stalk if left too long in the fridge, as will many other brassicas. Whether you could ever get a useable crop of sprouts by this method I have no idea but I'm doubtful. I think that if it worked it would be done. Since sprouts are potential flowers I suspect they would just produce a few greens, at best, before bolting.

Let us know what happens to yours.
