Attempting vege garden in SW Florida

Posted by Holliflower Zone 9 (My Page) on

Needless to say, I am completely clueless. I dont even know where to start so I will just list what my plans are and maybe someone could tell me what to do or NOT do....

I live in SW Florida + I wanna grow sweet corn, tomatoes + asparagus (I believe the latter take a few yrs). I am very concerned about the critters here. I definitely don't wanna use chemicals but my backyard is on a fresh water canal (frogs/lizards/salamanders, yuk). And of course, our infamous fire ants! I tried planting flowers a few yrs ago+the every single seeds was totally GONE in 4 days.

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

:)

Asparagus will be tough in south florida.

The best plan is go to the florida forum and read through the countless threads about starting vegetable gardens. Food production in florida (especially south fl) is not comparable to other parts of north america.

Agree that the Florida Gardening forum is the place to start. Not only can they advise you on what crops will work there but on the proper planting times - which are far different than for most of us in the rest of the US. Your gardening season will soon be over until fall so you have plenty of time for research. :) Good luck.

Dave

PS: even Central Florida gardeners have difficulty growing asparagus, sorry.
