Asparagus - Do you have it outside the vegetable plot?

I was just wondering if I could take the Asparagus out of the main vegetable plot and grow it somewhere else. Is anyone else growing Asparagus outside their main vegetable area?

Right on the edge

I can see no reason not to keep a separate bed for perennial vegetables.

Oh yeah, all my gus is in its own bed, not the vegetable gardens. Easier to care for, different water needs, different feeding needs, no tiller damage to them when the gardens gets tilled, no ferns falling all over the other vegetables, etc.

ltilton, right on the edge of your vegetable garden, that must work out fine.

Dave, where did you put your asparagus?

I have perennial beds close to tree roots, or I have places with a little too much shade. I guess that's why I put it in the vegetable garden the last time.

I'll have to measure the amount of sun in different locations. I think the edge of the perennial bed is about 5hrs of sun and it's about 15 feet away from a Sycamore tree and Spruce in the next yard.

It works out fine because I run cords from posts on the corners of the bed to contain the ferns.

Asparagus can be trouble - but well worth it.

I've got my asparagus in it's own spot. It is on the north side of my garage and due to the shade in spring it takes longer for that area to warm up and consequently it takes longer for the asparagus to start growing. Other than the late start it grows fine.

I like the asparagus plants in a separate bed as well. The roots are not disturbed and it is easier to care for it's needs - IMO. This photo was taken when the plants were only one year old - we did not harvest the asparagus that year.
