Seems like we went from lows in the aughts up to mid-40's almost overnight hereabouts. I want to vernalize my artichoke plants in the coming weeks, but now I'm concerned it won't be cold enough to do so. I get the idea that temps just above freezing are the ideal (first experience growing them), and other than 1 cold night I don't see much of that temp range ahead in the forecast. Think it'll be an issue with regard to getting a first year crop? Variety is Emerald, by the way. I've sort of had the idea that I could put the plant trays in a spare refrigerator in the basement to keep my beer company at night. Is that a dumb idea? Your thoughts and experiences would be appreciated... As always!

Following with interest. I know that Dennis in MI vernalizes his artichokes in the fridge. However, I tried that once and they they just sat in the garden all season long without growing. Outdoor-vernalized ones grew and produced. I wonder if they require light during the process but I'm not really sure.

Before I set my artichokes out into their permenent homes, I did the normal hardening process; Day 1 - placed them outside in the shade for a couple of hours; Day 2 - Placed them outside in the shade for 2 hlours and in indirect sunlight for a couple of hours; Day 3 - Placed them in indirect sunlight for 4-6 hours; Day 4 - Indirect sun for 6 hours, direct sun for 2 hours; Day 5 - Transplanted them into the garden. Exact times are unimportant. They did okay.
