Fingerling Potato Spacing

I have some Laratte Fingerling Potatoes I'll be planting very soon. The place I got them from gives a rather confusing(at least to me)guideline for spacing. I've searched the web, these forums and there are almost as many opinions as there are replies.

I don't have too much space to work with but I don't want to sacrifice production either.

I understand normal spacing of regular potatoes is 12 inches apart and 36 inches between rows.

Are fingerlings generally spaced closer? By closer I don't mean so you can get more planted but because of the habit of the variety that they need less space.

Couple sites were talking 12-16 inches between rows. Isn't that a little tight?

Would 12 inches betwen plants and 24 inches between rows be too tight?

I've got approximately a 12'x12' space to work with.
