Renegade earthworms attacking onions

I can't believe it! There are hundreds of earthworms attacking my little onion plants I set out. I've never had this problem before.

The day after I planted the onion plants I find that they are all pulled over and the tops are pulled down into a worm hole. Crazy right? One greedy beggar pulled three tops into his hole. I've tried standing the plants upright again but the next morning it's the same dang deal!

What do you suggest? Have you ever had this problem before?

Yes, they love onion tops especially if the tips are brown. Don't know of any remedy except keep resetting and clipping of the brown tips.
