Clear plastic can be used. Either make sure it sits flat and secured around the edges or use the plastic and construct a low tunnel with rebar and flexible pvc.

Second the clear plastic. Landscape fabric is worse than bare soil because it doesn't transmit heat well to the soil. Ensure the soil is very moist, close to soggy, before you put the plastic on. After a few sunny days, take it off and let the soil dry out as necessary.
