I didn't even know deer mice liked pepper plants. Well now I do. They entered my greenhouse underneath the baseboard because rain and snow had softened the dirt. Some seedlings were dug up and others were just decapitated. They also love basil, especially Thai basil, evidenced by the 120 seedlings gone. Now I'm off to seal the holes and set some traps. And of course, reseed. I'm also going to install those ultrasound repellants - anyone ever have luck with those?

And the season begins...I feel your frustration. All that's worked for me are traps.

I had a rat nest under my chicken coop last summer. 12 gauge took out about 4 of them in one go, I put a thing poison under there for the rest. Aint seen a single one since.

Ultrasound repellant works for me in the house. Not sure how it will be in greenhouse...

I think those work for a while. Sorry about your peppers, that's a big loss since those can be so slow growing. Voles ate about 1/2 my Amish Snap peas before they came up, little buggers. Traps are in place and backup measures are being marshalled. Small mammals have come to the top of the list of problems to be dealt with in the garden for me. Lucky about the peas I'm just trialing them, so if only a handful make it I'll still be happy.

For what it's worth, I just looked up "squirrel recipes" for the same reason...little b*stard.

Yeah, I just moved from the city to the country last year. I was expecting issues with deer, rabbits, bugs, even voles, but not mice. Funny thing is they did not touch the ground cherries at all, so evidently there's something much more toxic in their foliage compared to pepper plants.

Or maybe they are just full. I have not had mice trouble in the garden yet, but I certainly can empathize with your heartbreak, is there enough time for you to get more peppers going?

traps baited with peanut butter work pretty good for mice. for voles, find their tunnel entrance holes. set mouse traps at the entrance but tie them down with wire or drill a hole in them & anchor them with a large nail. with the squirrels I live trap them or get out my air rifle. last year I carefully harvested the buckeyes from my bottle brush buckeyes . every one that I planted the squirrels got. I just dispatched one ten minutes ago digging up bulbs.
