Hello diggers! What do you think about Foliar Spraying? Does it work well for vegetable gardens? I find foliar spraying greatly enhances blooms (its the Fish and Seaweed working in tandem) I think.

I think it's a band aid for poor soil. If you have good healthy soil, foliar should not be necessary. It has it's uses, but I would focus on improving my soil over anything.

Foliar feeding (the reason for spraying) is a hotly debated practice. Some swear by it. Just as many scoff at it. The vital point IMO is if you are going to do it, do it correctly. It isn't just a matter of mixing up some fertilizer in a sprayer and hosing it on. There are so many variables involved that you can't accurately make any broad claims about it - good or bad. Some plants it seems to work well on, others it can easily harm. Some nutrient mixes work well as a foliar spray, others have little to no benefit. When it is applied - in the plant growth cycle and also time of day - can make a big difference in the harm or good it may do.. So for the vegetable garden as a whole? No. Just as all vegetables aren't planted at the same time, just as they don't absorb and use nutrients the same, and don't require the same amount or type of nutrients or water, foliar feeding can't be claimed to be good for the whole garden. Good soil is the key to success. Occasional foliar feeding of some vegetables has a supplemental role only and done incorrectly, can do more harm than good. Dave

I agree with Howelbama. Foliar feeding is bypassing the root system , where certain nutrients might not be readily available. It is also a quick fix. But if your soil has a correct pH and certain element are not in balance, foliar feeding can help. The Miracle Grow water soluble fertilizer in a feeder/sprayer does that in part. So people get lush flowers. Just be careful to use a light dose not to burn the plants. I have used epsom salt and peroxide in the past but not sure how effective it is.

I think there are some plants that it is effective on. For example, I see tomatoes flourishing when foliar feeding them. It may have to do with the fish or seaweed in the spray. The micro nutrients may be more readily absorbed via the stoma.
