As long as you can reach the center all the way down from both sides - no problem. Many split up their beds so they can separate crops with very different nutrient and water needs - ie: tomatoes vs. beans. If you can deal with those issues in one big bed, great and less wasted space on paths.

We oldtimers who still grow in the ground rather than in raised beds have been successfully gardening in big plots of land for decades :)

Thanks Dave! The separation for nutrient purposes makes perfect sense... as does gardening directly in the dirt! I'll get back to that "oldtimer" technique as soon as my soil conditioning regiment turns my clay/concrete mixture into, well, pretty much anything else!

I am planning a raised bed for the first time and was told to mix equal parts of compost,vermiculite,and peat moss. What about garden soil? Should I add any amendments like lime or minerals?

I get my soil mix from the landfill (certified organic), then add my own compost spring or fall.

The mixture you speak of is called Mel's Mix. It works, but depending on the size of your bed, can get very expensive. I put in several new raised beds this year and I ordered a 40% sand 60% compost mixture in bulk for a fraction of the price of Mel's Mix. All I added was some chicken and cow manure and some cotton burr compost for extra nutrients and nitrogen from the manure. So far everything is growing great!
