I have three zucchini plants, when there are female and male flowers open, since there are not many bees around, i have to do a hand pollination in the morning and it worked well, zucchini grew to a foot long. if i don't do it, the zucchini stays the same size or rot. But there are days where 4 or 5 female flowers open and no male, the next day there's only male flower. My question is, If i use the new male flower to pollinate the female flowers from the day before by ripping the female flower petals off, would it still work? I noticed the female flower part turned to darker yellow and bit dry, would there be a chance for the the zucchini to grow bigger?

It wouldn't hurt to try it but I'd be surprised if you got results. The pollen is short-lived and once the blooms closes back up it is already dying or at the very least sticky and not viable. Same holds true for the ovule in the female bloom. If you have any other type of squash growing you can use a male from one of those plants to pollinate the zukes. You wouldn't want to save the seeds but it would still get you zucchini this year. Dave

Thanks a lot, Dave, I have exactly the same problem. And keep up the good job of posting again and again not to overwater tomatoes, half of mine are currently dying because I did not listen to you :-( I watered them, a lot, with the hose, four days in a row after transplanting, and despite dry wind and hot sun, they are turning yellow :-( Oh my fifty babies grown from tomato fest 's seeds I'm so sorry I didn't do like you said !

I had the same problem last year, but it was with winter squash. I pollinated them with zucchini pollen, and it worked. Just like Dave said. Your plants will get bigger eventually, and you will have more flowers, so you shouldn't have to do this for too long. -Anne
