fertilizing in the garden

I have some Dynamite granular fertilizer that I bought for my potted plants (using the 5-1-1 mix) and I've noticed my potted tomatoes are looking much nicer than my in-ground tomatoes. Can I just sprinkle the Dynamite fertilizer on the ground around the tomatoes? Typically I just add some compost/manure to my beds when I prep them in the Spring, but judging by the difference in the plants, I'm wondering if that isn't enough.... of course, it could also be differences in drainage or other factors, right? The tomatoes in the ground don't look 'bad', they just aren't growing as fast or look as good as the ones in pots.

Thoughts?
