That's the pupae of a cicada. See that split on its back? It's trying to rupture the pupal case and get the heck outta there. It will emerge as an adult cicada.

cicada pupae do look strange.

My kids have grossed out a lot of their friends by taking these (once they're empty) to school for show and tell.

hahaha thanks so much! Maybe if I hadn't been too scared to touch it I would have figured out it was a shell and not an actual bug :-)
